and devotional works are some of the items that are
now available to browse through on-line, thanks to a
British Library initiative. The Turning the Page system
allows viewers to see historic books from the Library’s
collection page by page at the click of a mouse. The
10 works which have been made accessible include the
Lindisfarne Gospels. Adrian Arthur, head of web services
at the British Library, described putting Turning the
Pages on-line as “an unprecedented opportunity to experience
some of the great treasures of our collections in all
their glory – not just as isolated reproductions.” ‘Turning

Churches on the World Wide Web The UK's first web-based,
3D church, opened as a three-month experiment on May
11th 2004. Church of Fools is an attempt to create holy
ground on the internet, where people can worship, pray
and talk about faith. The church is partly intended
for people on the edges of faith and so the language
can be colourful. It has a virtual reality representation
on screen much like an online game.
www.i-church.org
The internet church, or i-church, is a Christian
community of the Church of England based in the Diocese
of Oxford under the pastoral care of the Bishop
of Oxford.
i-church is open to anyone, and membership
can be held at the same time as membership of any other
Christian Church. For people who travel a great deal
or are unable to attend regularly, i-church can
support them spiritually wherever they are in the world.
Organised through an active web site, and led by a
properly authorised network of ‘web pastors',
its purpose is:
-
to provide a Christian community for people who
want to explore Christian discipleship but are not
able to belong to a local congregation.
-
to provide an additional means of support to those
who do not find all that they need within their
own worshipping community
-
to provide a supportive spiritual community for
people who travel, either through their work or
in their life-style, and who are not able to maintain
relationships with a geographical Christian community.
